Nationally Recognized Care

HealthGrades

Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City received four (2009) national clinical excellence awards for orthopedic services, joint replacement surgery, vascular surgery, and coronary interventional procedures from HealthGrades, the nation’s leading healthcare ratings company. Mercy received more 2009 HealthGrades awards than any other Iowa hospital.

The basis for Mercy’s accolades was the eleventh annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study, which is the most comprehensive study of its kind, analyzing more than 41 million Medicare hospitalization records from 2005 to 2007 at the nation’s approximately 5,000 non-federal hospitals.

According to the HealthGrades study, Mercy Medical Center ranks among the top 5% of the nation’s hospitals for coronary interventional procedures for the fourth year in a row.

Mercy, the top-ranked hospital in Iowa for orthopedic services and joint replacement surgery, also ranks in the top 5% in the nation for joint replacement, and is the only hospital in western Iowa in that elite tier.

According to the 2009 study, Mercy also ranks in the top 5% of the nation’s hospitals for vascular surgery, and is rated best in northern and western Iowa for vascular surgery. The hospital also ranks among the best hospitals in the region for stroke care.

The medical center achieved HealthGrades’ highest rating – five-stars – for its patient outcomes in many clinical areas including coronary intervention, total knee replacement, total hip replacement, hip fracture repair surgery, carotid surgery, peripheral vascular bypass, stroke treatment, treatment for pulmonary embolism, and appendectomy procedures.

Mercy is also the only hospital in the area to have earned HealthGrades' Clinical Excellence Award for Women's Health (2009/10).  This honor ranks Mercy in the top 5% of the nation's hospitals for clinical outcomes in key services for women.

American College of Cardiology Foundation and American Heart Association

In October 2009, Mercy received the American College of Cardiology Foundation's prestigious NCDR ACTION Registry--Get With the Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award.  Mercy is one of only 121 U.S. hospitals to earn this distinction, which recognizes the hospital system's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients.  Mercy is the only Siouxland area hospital to have earned the honor.

American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer

Mercy is the only Siouxland healthcare facility to have a cancer care program that bears the prestigious approval of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).  In order to meet the exacting standards necessary for approval, Mercy last underwent a rigorous evaluation and performance review in 2007. That on-site assessment revealed no deficiencies. In fact, surgeon reviewers gave Mercy eight commendations in such areas as outcomes analysis, clinical trial research, prevention and early detection, and cancer-related improvements.

American College of Surgeons (Trauma)

Mercy's regional Level II trauma center continues to hold the prestigious verification of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).  ACS program verification attests that Mercy adheres to rigorous standards for excellence in emergency medicine.   The highest-ranking Emergency Department in western Iowa is also the only one in the Siouxland region to hold ACS trauma program approval.

American Cancer Society

In October 2008, the Mercy Hereditary Cancer Prevention Clinic at Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City was honored with the American Cancer Society’s Community Partnership Award for outstanding contributions during the past year in partnership with the Society’s Health Promotions.  The award recognized Dr. Cindie Wolff, Amy Slevin and Marcie Lechtenberg of Mercy’s Hereditary Cancer Prevention Program for their “vision and roles in furthering the American Cancer Society’s mission by achieving tremendous impact in the area of early detection and treatment through their project ‘New Links to Colorectal Cancer Prevention.’”

The Joint Commission

Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City has earned national certification as a stroke center from the Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Mercy is the only hospital in the Siouxland region to have earned to Joint Commission's prominent certification as a stroke center.  Mercy first earned the “Gold Seal of Approval” for primary stroke care in January 2005. The Joint Commission has since re-certified Mercy as a primary stroke center after another on-site review.

American Stroke Association

In 2009, the American Stroke Association awarded Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City its Get With The Guidelines–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Gold Performance Achievement Award. The honor recognizes Mercy’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.  To receive the GWTG-Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award, Mercy consistently complied for at least one year with the requirements in the GWTG–Stroke program. These include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs, and smoking cessation. This twelve-month evaluation period is the second in an ongoing self-evaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2008 and 2009 presented Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City with Medals of Honor recognizing the hospital for its efforts in organ donation.
