Fifth Street Closure Will Accommodate

Construction of Mercy Energy Plant

Officials from Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City and the City of Sioux City have announced that Fifth Street will be closed for up to two months while the hospital builds a new energy plant.

Starting Monday, May 3, Fifth Street will be closed to traffic from just east of Jones Street to just east of Jennings Street because contractors will be constructing a tunnel under intersection of 5th and Jennings Streets. That tunnel will connect the hospital’s new heating and cooling systems inside a new structure on the former site of Hatfield Hardware to Mercy’s main campus.

Jennings Street will also be closed from Fifth to Sixth along the east side of Mercy’s main hospital building.

Traffic on Fifth Street will be directed to a detour down Jackson Street to Third Street, then down Third Street to Virginia, Court or Iowa Streets, before returning northbound to Fifth.

Jones Street will remain open from Fifth Street to Third Street past the Sioux City Convention Center. The entrances and exits to the city’s Discovery Parking Ramp will remain open on Jones Street.

Access to Mercy’s Heart Center parking ramp will remain open off Fifth Street, but will be closed from the hospital’s south circle drive.

Access to Jackson Recovery will remain open from the intersection of Fifth and Jones Streets. City buses will stop on the west side of Jackson Recovery on Jones Street.

Access to Kar-Life Battery and Mac’s Auto Service will be available from Third to Virginia Streets or from Sixth to Virginia Streets.

Mercy is sending communications to EMS personnel throughout the region to outline the best routes for ambulance traffic to the hospital while Fifth Street is closed.

According to present construction plans, Fifth Street and Jennings Street should reopen to traffic by early July, if not sooner.
