Mercy Plans Annual Welte Lectureship for Healthcare Professionals

Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City will host its 13th annual Verna Welte Lectureship for nurses and other healthcare professionals on May 4 and 5 at the Sioux City Convention Center.

Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, advanced practice nurses and other healthcare professionals may choose to attend either an evening program on Tuesday, May 4 from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m., or a daytime session on Wednesday, May 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Mercy’s annual Welte Lectureship is designed to provide nurses with a renewed sense of pride in the nursing profession.

Founded in 1998, the annual conference is named in honor of long-time nursing professional Verna Welte, who was a nursing instructor and administrator at St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, and later vice president of Patient Care Services at Marian Health Center, now Mercy Medical Center. She has since retired.

This year’s featured speaker for the Verna Welte Lectureship will be Kay Wagner, MSN, RN, CTM, a nationally known speaker and author who believes that all life experiences – whether good or bad – can ultimately empower people to become more compassionate, caring and courageous individuals.

Wagner’s book, Kara’s Courage: A Nurse’s Story of Her Child’s Experience with Cancer Viewed from the Other Side of the Stretcher, is a story of courage, faith, inspiration and facing fear.

Her address for the 2010 Welte Lectureship in Sioux City is titled “Redefining the 5 Senses: Increasing Your Personal and Professional Growth Potential.” She will discuss how nurses and other professionals must create a respectful, caring environment in their own personal lives before they can care for others at an optimal level. The five senses outlined by Wagner include a sense of self, a sense of ability, a sense of direction, a sense of humor, and a sense of accomplishment.

The early registration fee for the conference is $49 for the May 4 evening session, or $69 for the May 5 daytime session if postmarked by April 24. After that date, all fees will be $10 more. There is no charge for nursing professionals employed by Mercy Medical Center and members of the St. Vincent’s School of Nursing Alumnae Association.

The evening session will include a soup and sandwich buffet. The daytime session will include a continental breakfast and lunch.
