Surgical Treatment for the Clinically Severe Obese
Mercy Medical Center’s Comprehensive Bariatric Program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to the surgical treatment of the severely overweight. Specifically, we offer Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY) and laparoscopic adjustable band.
Our bariatric team includes physicians, nurses, a psychologist, dietitians and physical therapists – all of whom have a singular interest in the problems caused by morbid obesity. We are dedicated to lifestyle and health improvements for the overweight through weight loss from surgery, while recognizing the contributions of mental health, nutritional support and physical activity to this process. We believe this team effort is crucial to achieve long-term positive patient outcomes and permanent weight loss success.
The program’s goals are to:
- focus on positive patient outcomes both physically and emotionally
- provide extensive assessments, education, and evaluations
- instill rational expectations
- deliver superb clinical outcomes
- provide adequate support
The program includes pre- and post-operative assessments, education sessions, ongoing evaluations and support groups. Patients are seen before surgery and up to three months after surgery. They are then encouraged to attend the support group, which is especially critical the first year after surgery. Communication between the surgeon offices and Mercy's bariatric coordinator is ongoing so patient outcomes can be monitored and tracked after surgery.
Bariatric surgical procedures have been performed at Mercy-Sioux City since 1976. From our state-of-the-art Surgical Services Department to our specialized bariatric inpatient care unit, Mercy's expert staff is fully prepared and appropriately experienced to care for weight-loss surgery patients.
Patient support services for Mercy's bariatric surgery program are coordinated by the Mercy Weight Loss Center at Dakota Dunes, which gives patients both surgical and non-surgical weight loss options.
