Mercy Medical Center Honored with an Environmental Excellence Award
Start Date
Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City has been awarded the Environmental Excellence Award from Sterilmed Inc., a Minnesota-based health care cost containment company and leading reprocessor of single-use medical devices. Sterilmed honors top facilities and systems throughout the country, and Mercy Medical Center has been recognized as a Best Practice facility for its superior accomplishments in reducing environmental impact and improving overall health care sustainability through medical device recycling.

Reprocessing and recycling medical devices have become essential components of sustainability programs in the health care community. Reprocessing is proven to not only decrease the magnitude of waste sent to landfills, but also reduce the cost of providing safe and effective medical devices to patients. Mercy Medical Center is acknowledged as a leader in the health care community for their dedication to environmental excellence.

“We are delighted to distinguish Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City with an Environmental Excellence Award and congratulate them for their commitment to both financial sustainability and medical waste reduction in the community. Mercy is steadfast in its reprocessing program and should be proud of the strides they’ve made in protecting the environment,” said Mike Gustafson, Worldwide President of Sterilmed.

Mercy’s effort is carried out through the dedication of several departments in the hospital. Environmental Services and the nursing units all participate in saving used medical items from the patient care areas. Supply Chain then collects the items and boxes and ships them for recycling.

In 2011, 25,702 items were reprocessed and saved from entering the landfill. That amounted to 12,607 lbs. of waste and a savings of $6300 in costs. The items collected for reprocessing include: SCD sleeves, pulse oximeters and tourniquet cuffs.
