Mercy’s Foundation Awarded Grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City’s Foundation has been awarded $25,402 from Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This funding will be used toward the “Promoting Breast Health” project at Akron Mercy Medical Clinic.
“Promoting Breast Health” will target women ages 40-75 who have not had a mammogram in the last fourteen months and who do not have adequate resources to pay for a mammogram.
In addition to mammograms, the grant funds awarded will also be used to cover genetic testing for patients who would benefit, but lack insurance coverage. The testing will be partially or fully covered, depending on the patient’s financial situation. Women over the age of 18 will receive a hereditary cancer test kit and follow up will occur with those who are determined to be high risk.
Amy Slevin, Director of Clinical Program Development at Mercy Medical Center worked to prepare the grant proposal. “The Komen grant will allow us to be proactive with women in the area who otherwise might go unscreened. We are grateful to Komen for providing this grant for us,” said Slevin.
