Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City has installed a new 3.0 Tesla (3T) Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner to replace the existing unit. Total investment is $3.0 million for the MRI and renovation.
Mercy is the only Joint Commission accredited Stroke Center in the region. The 3T MRI meets the high-resolution requirements of acute brain and neurovascular imaging. Emerging clinical evidence indicates perfusion imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, and MR spectroscopy are all enhanced by 3T MRI. In addition, the 3T MRI provides Mercy with the ability to perform breast MRIs, cardiac MRIs, abdominal MRI/MRA and services to bariatric patients. This is the most powerful MRI in all of Siouxland.
Barb Black, Director of Radiology, said that Mercy staff will receive onsite training and expects the new MRI to be in use by January 13. Black says that patients will not have to travel to Omaha or Minneapolis for these imaging services. Now patients can stay close to home.
