Mercy's Scarmon to Receive 2014 Excellence in Protection Award
Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City is pleased to announce that Amy Scarmon, an interviewer at Mercy's Child Advocacy Center, was nominated and will receive the Iowa Sex Offender Registry's Award during their annual conference in Des Moines on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. The award is designed to recognize individuals who have made notable contributions to the public safety community and to the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.
On the weekend of December 1, 2013, Amy was called in to work at the Child Advocacy Center to conduct a forensic interview with a child involved in child pornography. The circumstances were very challenging, but she leveraged her talent and expertise as a Child Forensic Interviewer to obtain disclosure of key details in the ongoing abuse case.
Amy began working at the Child Advocacy Center in 2003. Since that time she has interviewed over 3000 children regarding child abuse. Amy has a Masters of Arts in Counseling and has attended many trainings and attained certificates regarding the interviewing of abused children. Prior to coming to Mercy, Amy worked as a mental health counselor with Lutheran Social Services of Iowa and Jackson Recovery. She is very involved in community activities. She co-chairs the Safe Kids Woodbury County, is active on committees with the Iowa Chapter of Child Advocacy Centers, teaches professionals and adults about child abuse prevention, serves as an expert witness in court, and maintains the Center's Facebook page with up-to-date information. Amy has also been the recipient of Child Advocate of the Year by Union County South Dakota in 2012.
Amy was nominated by her multi-disciplinary peers and selected to receive this award in recognition of dedicating her skills to an active investigation which made a significant impact on a child victim of sexual abuse. Amy's colleagues speak highly of her professionalism, positive energy, and extensive service to her community. She clearly possesses the exceptional qualities as a recipient of this award.
