Mercy Medical Center and Siouxland Urology Associates held a very successful prostate cancer screening Wednesday at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in Sioux City. Nearly 160 Siouxland area men took advantage of the opportunity to have a PSA blood test and exam from Siouxland Urology.

Mercy and Siouxland Urology have been long-time partners in providing these screenings to residents of our region and have become v. The focus on prostate cancer is especially significant during the month of September - National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The American Cancer Society indicates that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American men, behind only lung cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute, 15 percent of men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2001-2007 were diagnosed when the disease was already advanced or had become metastatic. Having advanced prostate cancer can be overwhelming, but men may be able to better manage their disease by following three "C"s: Communicate about advanced prostate cancer, Consult with your healthcare team and Consider the options available for treatment.

As part of its outreach to the community, Mercy Medical Center conducts a series of health screenings throughout the year. Typically, all appointments are filled in a very short period of time.
