The December Mercy 101 topic is certainly timely. On Tuesday,
December 13, Mercy Medical Center’s Dr. Steven Joyce will speak on the topic of “Dealing with Diabetes.” Dr. Joyce operates out of the Mercy Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Clinic and he will team with Mercy’s diabetes educators to share the latest developments in the prevention and treatment of diabetes.
Mercy 101 is a monthly educational series for Siouxland and continues to grow in popularity since it launched in October. There is no fee to participate, but attendees must register for each class on a monthly basis.
Jim Wharton, the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Mercy, says the Mercy 101 class offerings are proving to be very popular with Siouxland residents. Wharton said, “Nearly 100 people turned out last month to hear a presentation on Heart Health from Mercy Cardiology’s Dr. Mick Hurley. Because of the increased incidence in diabetes, we are expecting another big crowd to hear Dr. Joyce.” In addition to hearing a presentation on diabetes, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions of Dr. Joyce and will also receive a free glucose check if they desire.
Mercy 101 classes are free to the public and are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month through May (with the exception of the December and April presentations) in the hospital’s Leiter Room. In addition to having an opportunity to listen and ask questions of doctors and other health care providers, attendees will receive a free Mercy 101 binder for their materials and also be able to take advantage of free health screenings and occasional giveaways at many sessions. Mercy 101 classes will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last one hour. Registration is required and may be done online at www.mercysiouxcity.com. Click on the Classes and Events tab and select Mercy 101 from the Event drop-down box or register by phone at 712-279-2989. Attendees may attend as many of the monthly sessions as they like. Early registrations are encouraged as a few of the classes are already close to capacity. Here is the schedule for the first four months of Mercy 101. The remaining schedule beginning in February will be released later this fall.
