The Mercy Heart Center will kick off Heart Month with a special community event, a Heart Expo, Sunday, February 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend the free event, which will take place on the fourth and fifth floors of the Mercy Heart Center, 801 Fifth Street.
Heart Center staff members and physicians will offer free carotid artery mini-screenings, blood pressure screenings, lung function screenings and cardiac risk assessments.
Events and activities going on simultaneously during the two-hour period on Sunday will include heart-healthy cooking demonstrations by Chef Tracey Badar, an open-heart surgery demonstration, and an electrophysiology demonstration in Mercy’s new state-of-the-art facilities. There will also be information about sleep apnea and heart-healthy exercise.
Physicians of Mercy Cardiology will also hold “Ask the Cardiologist” sessions during the Heart Expo. It will give participants an opportunity to ask physicians questions about the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Mercy will also hold a drawing for 25 people to receive a full vascular screening, cardiac calcium scoring and cholesterol screening – all free of charge. One lucky participant will receive a cardiology evaluation including a stress echo and lipid counseling with a cardiologist. Free Heart Health cookbooks will also be given to all participants from Chef Tracey and Mercy Cardiology.
Event attendees will have a chance to enjoy healthy hors d’oeuvres. The Heart Center will also send a giveaway bag home with each person.
Registration is not necessary for Sunday’s special event.
Those attending the Heart Expo may park free in the hospital and Heart Center parking ramps. Once inside the ramp, they need only take the elevator to the fourth floor of the Heart Center to attend the Expo.
