Heart Month specials & events, health screenings, and kids’ classes highlight the Winter 2012 schedule of community education events and classes offered by Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City.

Heart Month Specials & Events

Cholesterol Screening (includes Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, Cholesterol Ratio, and fasting blood sugar is available Monday-Friday at three locations from 7-9am for $12 - Mercy Heart Center, 5th Floor, Mercy Dunes Lab, Mercy Business Health at Singing Hills. A 12-hour fast is required. This test is FREE if you are or become a “Passport to Health” member. This card is free and you receive an annual free cholesterol screening with priority to get into health screenings like the skin cancer screening, oral head and neck screening, osteoporosis screenings, prostate cancer screenings and others. You also receive discounts on vascular screenings and the cardiac CT scan. To receive your free card, email odonnelk@mercyhealth.com or call 712-279-2989.

Wear Red Day, Friday, February 3, 9-10am in Mercy’s south lobby.
This national celebration will begin with a reading of a proclamation by Mayor Bob Scott. Wear red and enjoy heart health refreshment. Heart health information will be available.

Heart Expo, Sunday, February 12, 11am – 1pm in the Mercy Heart Center. Includes: a free gift for all attendees, delicious hors d’oeuvres, coffee and drink. Demonstrations and screenings include: A Heart Healthy Cooking Demonstration by Chef Tracey (all attendees get a free heart healthy cookbook), free carotid artery mini-screening, lung function screening, open heart surgery simulation by Dr. Keith Allen, Ask the Cardiologist sessions by Dr. Mick Hurley, electrophysiology lab simulation by Dr. Alan Zhu, cardiac rehab demonstrations, and information stations on weight loss, sleep apnea, and tobacco cessation.

Jump & Hula for Heart, Saturday, February 25, 1-3pm held at the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA. Mercy Red Dress Ambassadors and the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa invite girls to attend an afternoon of fun activities including hip hop dance, yoga, jump rope rhythm, visit with a Mercy Cardiologist, nutrition session, snacks and drink. Cost is $1.00 and pre-registration is required by calling 712-255-0187.


Community Programs

Mercy 101 is a series of educational programs you can attend to learn about issues relevant to your health. Receive a Mercy 101 folder that you will bring to each class. Sessions are one hour and may include a free screening as well as giveaways. Sessions are held the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm, located in Mercy’s Leiter Room (behind the gift shop). January 24--Cook Like It’s 2012 (cooking demonstration); February 28--Meet Mr. daVinci, Mercy’s surgical robot; March 27—My Old Achy Bones (includes a free bone density screening); April 10—What’s the Reason for the Sneezin? (allergies). Pregnancy, Parenting and Kids’ Classes

Mercy Medical Center offers a full schedule of pregnancy and parenting programs, including Childbirth Preparation and Boot Camp for New Dads and a Family & Friends Infant/Child Safety & CPR class that is great for parents and grandparents.

Mercy’s Breastfeeding class will convene on March 15 and May 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Room 300 of the Central Medical Building. A certified lactation consultant will instruct women and their support persons on basic successful breastfeeding techniques.

Mercy will offer a Home Alone Safety class for children 8 to 12 years old on Saturday, April 21, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm in the hospital’s Leiter Room. This class is a great opportunity to teach kids who are staying home for the first time, or are still a little nervous about being home alone, the skills necessary to be safe and confident of what to do when their parents are gone
