Mercy To Hold Infectious Disease Symposium Sept. 18

Mercy Medical Center will hold its 2012 Infectious Disease Symposium for physicians, nurses and other medical professionals on Tuesday, September 18 at the Sioux City Convention Center. The day will commence with check-in at 7:45 am and the first presentation at 8:30 am. The event will conclude at 3:00 pm.

The conference will provide attendees with the latest information about the diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology of infectious diseases and the prevention and control of infectious agents.

Bertha Ayi M.D., FACP, Medical Director of the Infectious Disease Clinic at Mercy Medical Center, will provide guests with a welcome and a presentation on C-dif, or Clostridium difficile, a bacterium that causes severe diarrhea and other intestinal disease.

Gregg Galloway, M.D., FCAP will update attendees on polymerase chain reaction (PCR), biochemical technology in molecular biology to amplify a single or a few copies of a piece of DNA, and bacteriophage testing, a number of viruses that infect bacteria. Dr. Galloway is a pathologist at Mercy Medical Center.

Widely acclaimed national speaker, noted for her humorous, entertaining and information packed seminars, Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP will give a presentation entitled, “Shampoos, Tattoos, and Barbecues—Past, Present, and Future.”

Following lunch, Patricia Quinlisk, MD, MPH will provide guests with new issues in public health and an update on infectious diseases. Dr. Quinlisk is a medical epidemiologist practicing at the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The day will end with another presentation from Dr. Greg Galloway on the transition from a nursing home to the hospital.

Continuing education credit will be available for physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The cost for the one-day conference is $89 if the participant’s registration is postmarked by Sept. 10. Late registration fees will be $99.
