FitzPatrick Named Interim President/CEO of Mercy – Sioux City

Jim FitzPatrick has been named the interim president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center – Sioux City, according to Milton Avery who chairs the medical center’s Board of Directors, and David Vellinga, president and CEO of Mercy Health Network (MHN) in Iowa, based in West Des Moines. FitzPatrick is senior vice president for Network Development for MHN. Prior to assuming the statewide role with MHN, FitzPatrick served for 10 years as president/CEO of Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City. He replaces Robert “Bob” Peebles who recently announced his retirement from Mercy – Sioux City.

“Jim is an outstanding health care executive with a proven track record and an uncompromising commitment to quality, service and process improvement,” said Avery. “His accomplishments in leading the medical center Mason City and in other hospitals before that are extremely impressive.”

Vellinga agreed, noting, “I’ve worked with Jim for more than 25 years. No executive in our system is more committed to the people he serves, whether they be patients, staff members, volunteers or members of the medical staff. Jim also has a wonderful sense of humor and a collaborative management style. I am confident he is the perfect person to assist Mercy – Sioux City through this leadership transition.”

FitzPatrick has a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from the University of Arizona, and a Master’s Degree in Hospital and Health Administration, from the University of Iowa. In addition to serving at MHN and Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa, he served as president/CEO of Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

FitzPatrick has received many honors for his work in health care including the Iowa Hospital Association “Leadership in Excellence Award,” the highest award given to a hospital CEO in the state. In addition, while in Mason City he received the community’s “Distinguished Citizen Award” as well as the “Bob Dutcher Community Service Award.” He served as president of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives.

FitzPatrick will begin his duties at Mercy – Sioux City April 1. A search for a permanent president and CEO will begin immediately.
