Cardiac Rehabilitation
The
4,400-square-foot Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center, located
on the fourth floor of the new Mercy Heart Center, is dominated
by 12-foot, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer dramatic views of
the city and the Missouri River. Rehabilitation clients have access
to an indoor walking track, treadmills, stationary bikes, upper-body
exercise equipment, free weights, NuSteps, Airdynes and universal
exercise equipment. The nationally-certified rehabilitation program
limits the physiological and psychological effects of cardiac illness,
strives to stabilize or improve the patient’s condition and
enhances the patient’s quality of life.
Cardiac rehabilitation is prescribed at three stages during the
patient’s recovery. Phase I is the inpatient stage where the
cardiac rehab nurse works with the patient on activity, education
and discharge planning. During Phase II, the outpatient hospital-based
program, participants engage in a continuously ECG-monitored program
of exercise therapy to enhance their overall physical condition
as well as improve cardiovascular fitness. Participants also receive
education on heart disease and life-style modification. Phase III
is the home maintenance stage of cardiac rehab. The main goal of
this phase is secondary prevention and maintenance of exercise and
life-style changes.
