Mercy to Host Heart Surgery Symposium, Sept. 19-21

Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City will give physicians and healthcare providers from across the region the latest information regarding heart valve replacement surgery in a special educational symposium next week.

Mercy will host Professor Gilles Dreyfus, MD, FRCS, a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon for Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital in London, and Stephane Aubert, MD, chief resident of Cardiothoracic Surgery for Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital, and La Pitie Hospital in Paris.

Considered one of the world’s preeminent cardiothoracic surgeons, Dr. Dreyfus will host a teaching program titled, “New Trends and Techniques for Mitral Valve Repair” Tuesday evening at the Dakota Dunes Country Club. Dreyfus will also present on the topic of “Early Intervention for Mitral Valve Disease” during a luncheon Grand Rounds program at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Mercy Medical Center.

Drs. Dreyfus and Aubert will also observe Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgeons Keith Allen, MD, and John Anderson, MD, as they complete several cardiothoracic surgical procedures scheduled Monday through Wednesday at Mercy.

Drs. Allen and Anderson are serving as program directors for the first-ever “Sioux City Valve Symposium,” next week.

Educated in Paris, Dr. Dreyfus was invited to join London’s prestigious Harefield Hospital by world-renowned physician Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub in 2001. In addition to serving as consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, he is Head of Research at the hospital, and is a member of the Directorate of Surgery and Transplant Executive.

Previously, Dreyfus was selected to succeed world-renowned surgeon Professor Daniel Guilmet as head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at Foch Hospital in Suresnes, France. He held that post from 1998 to 2001. During the preceding 9 years, Dreyfus was a professor of Cardiovascular Surgery and assistant to Professor Guilmet.

Following extensive education and residency in Paris and Lyon, France, Dr. Aubert is currently a clinical fellow in cardiothoracic surgery at Harefield Hospital in London, where he works closely with Professor Dreyfus.

Both Dreyfus and Aubert have numerous internationally published research articles to their credit.

Siouxland physicians and healthcare providers interested in the symposium may call Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgery at (712) 294-7000 for more information.
