Mercy to Host Heart Surgery Symposium, Sept. 19-21
Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City will give physicians and
healthcare providers from across the region the latest information
regarding heart valve replacement surgery in a special educational
symposium next week.
Mercy will host Professor Gilles Dreyfus, MD, FRCS, a consultant
cardiothoracic surgeon for Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital
in London, and Stephane Aubert, MD, chief resident of Cardiothoracic
Surgery for Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital, and La Pitie
Hospital in Paris.
Considered one of the world’s preeminent cardiothoracic surgeons,
Dr. Dreyfus will host a teaching program titled, “New Trends
and Techniques for Mitral Valve Repair” Tuesday evening at
the Dakota Dunes Country Club. Dreyfus will also present on the
topic of “Early Intervention for Mitral Valve Disease”
during a luncheon Grand Rounds program at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Mercy
Medical Center.
Drs. Dreyfus and Aubert will also observe Mercy Cardiothoracic Surgeons
Keith Allen, MD, and John Anderson, MD, as they complete several
cardiothoracic surgical procedures scheduled Monday through Wednesday
at Mercy.
Drs. Allen and Anderson are serving as program directors for the
first-ever “Sioux City Valve Symposium,” next week.
Educated in Paris, Dr. Dreyfus was invited to join London’s
prestigious Harefield Hospital by world-renowned physician Professor
Sir Magdi Yacoub in 2001. In addition to serving as consultant cardiothoracic
surgeon, he is Head of Research at the hospital, and is a member
of the Directorate of Surgery and Transplant Executive.
Previously, Dreyfus was selected to succeed world-renowned surgeon
Professor Daniel Guilmet as head of the Division of Cardiovascular
Surgery at Foch Hospital in Suresnes, France. He held that post
from 1998 to 2001. During the preceding 9 years, Dreyfus was a professor
of Cardiovascular Surgery and assistant to Professor Guilmet.
Following extensive education and residency in Paris and Lyon, France,
Dr. Aubert is currently a clinical fellow in cardiothoracic surgery
at Harefield Hospital in London, where he works closely with Professor
Dreyfus.
Both Dreyfus and Aubert have numerous internationally published
research articles to their credit.
