Mercy Announces Red Dress Art Contest Winners

The Mercy Heart Center’s Red Dress Ambassadors have announced the winners of their annual “Red Dress Art Contest” for kids, which sought to alert Siouxland residents of all ages about the serious threat of cardiovascular disease – especially to women.

In February, children in kindergarten through the 8th grade were invited to submit an original, color picture on 8 ½ by 11-inch paper that incorporated a red dress.

Hundreds of entries for the art contest were judged last week.

Elizabeth Voegeli, McCook Lake, a student at Dakota Valley Elementary, was named the first place winner in the Kindergarten through first grade division.  Meredith Townley, Sioux City, a student at Holy Cross—St. Michael, earned second place in that age category.

Welton Daniel, Dakota Dunes, a student at Sacred Heart School, submitted the first place entry in the second and third grade category.  McKenna Deaton, Sioux City, a student at Longfellow Elementary, was the second place winner in that age group.

Kierrah Quincy, Sioux City, a student at Mater Dei School, was judged the first place winner in the fourth and fifth grade division.  Sadie Elbert, Sioux City, a student at Sacred Heart, earned second place honors.

Sataya Branch, Sioux City, a student at West Middle School, was judged the first place winner among sixth through eighth grade students.  Tommy Thelen, Sioux City, a student at Holy Cross—Blessed Sacrament, and Angie Huynh, Sioux City, a student at North Middle School, tied for second place in the middle school competition.

The first place winners in each of the four age categories will receive checks for $50, and the second place winners will be awarded $25 prizes at a special presentation Thursday at the Sioux City Art Center.

The winning art contest entries for this year and the past two years will be on display at the Sioux City Art Center through March.  The winning entries can also be viewed on Mercy’s Web site at www.mercysiouxcity.com/heartcenter/2008.shtml.
