Mercy Reorganizes Stroke Survivors Support Group

Mercy Medical Center—Sioux City has announced that a support group for Siouxland stroke survivors and their families has been reorganized and will begin meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Cardiology Conference Room on the 5th floor of the Mercy Heart Center.

The Stroke Survivors Support Group is currently scheduled to meet on the third Wednesday of each month, but organizers say the meeting date and time might be changed depending on the consensus of support group members attending the first meeting next Wednesday.

“We are very pleased to reorganize and revitalize what was previously the Tri-State Stroke Club,” said Deb Motz, program manager for Mercy’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. “The group’s purpose will be to give members and their families support, inspiration, social interaction and education.”

The support group’s monthly meetings will focus on a wide variety of educational topics including psychological and sexual concerns, exercise, nutrition, prevention of recurrent stroke, coping skills for caregivers, and many other matters related to life after stroke.

“Ultimately, members of the support group will guide us in deciding future topics for educational programs and discussion,” Motz added. “It will be their support group, and it will center around their needs and interests.”

Those wishing to attend Stroke Survivors Support Group meetings will be welcome to park in the Mercy parking ramps, which have access points off Fifth and Sixth Streets. From inside the Heart Center parking ramp, they will simply need to take the elevators to the fifth floor.

Pre-registration is not required prior to the group’s first meeting.
