Mercy
Earns Second National Well Workplace Award
The Wellness Councils of America has awarded Mercy Medical Center—Sioux
City its Silver Well Workplace designation, recognizing Mercy as
one of “America’s Healthiest Companies.”
Mercy is the first Sioux City-based business or organization to
earn the award, which recognizes those companies that have obtained
strong senior-level support, created integrated wellness teams,
collected strategic organizational health data, and are delivering
tailored programs to meet their company’s needs.
In 2002, Mercy was honored with the Wellness Councils’ Bronze
Well Workplace Award.
In notifying Mercy of the award, David Hunnicutt, PhD, president
of Wellness Councils of America, said, “By successfully meeting
these rigorous health promotion standards, Mercy has clearly demonstrated
its commitment to improving the
health and well-being of its most valuable asset—its employees.”
“We proudly welcome Mercy to the elite group of America’s
Healthiest Companies,” Hunnicutt added.
Mari Kaptain-Dahlen, interim president and CEO of Mercy Medical
Center, said the hospital’s leaders and staff members were
honored to receive the award.
“Recognition of our efforts to promote a healthy workplace
is very gratifying,” said Kaptain-Dahlen. “We are privileged
and blessed that our staff is so very dedicated to taking care of
others. At the same time, however, we want to do whatever we can
to protect their own health and well being. That is why our comprehensive
wellness program is so very important to us.”
Kaptain-Dahlen credits Mercy’s Well Workplace subcommittee
for its work in promoting employee health and wellness at the hospital
and its affiliated clinics. The committee was responsible for compiling
a lengthy report for submission to the Wellness Council of America.
Mercy staff members currently serving on the subcommittee include
Kira Oregon, Sue Mohning, Kim Jorgensen, Harlan Hansen, Maryellen
Brazzell and Amy Slevin.
The Wellness Councils of America developed the Well Workplace Awards
initiative to advance its aggressive national worksite wellness
agenda. The initiative is driven by a rigorous set of criteria.
Since the awards program was established in 1991, just over 500
American corporations, health care systems, public agencies and
educational institutions have met the criteria for recognition as
“America’s Healthiest Companies.”
