Class goals:

  • To help families achieve and maintain healthy living
  • To help parents have a better understanding of children
  • To help parents find more effective, less harsh ways of disciplining their children
  • To help children gain the ability to identify their feelings
  • To help children learn more constructive ways of handling their anger
  • To help children gain the ability to resolve conflicts with peace rather than with violence

Parenting Classes
Meets every Thursday for six weeks. Topics include developmental stages, family relationships, communication, parenting styles and discipline for children ages birth to adolescence. Classes are free, but registration is required.

Dates:May 24 - July 12.
Time: 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Saturday Sessions:
Dates:May 19, June 28, July 21, Aug. 25, Sept. 22.
Time: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Parenting of Newborns to 1 Year Olds
Meets on three Wednesdays. Covers topics specific to parents-to-be and new parents of babies and includes monthly physical and emotional development, developmental stages, parenting skills, postpartum blues, bonding, feeding and sleeping. Shaken baby syndrome and sudden infant death syndrome also will be discussed.

Dates: May 15, 23, 30 OR July 11, 18, 25.
Time: 10 - 11:30 a.m.

Parenting of Toddlers
Covers topics specific to parents of toddlers (ages 1-4) and includes appropriate discipline techniques, parenting styles and family relationship.

Meets from 1 - 2:30 p.m. on these dates:

Aug. 8, 15, 22
Also meets from 5:30 - 9 p.m. on Sept. 6

Parenting of Teens Lunch and Learn
Covers topics relevant to parents of teenagers and includes drugs, alcohol prevention, self-esteem promotion and discipline techniques.Classes are free. You are welcome to bring your lunch. You must register to attend.

Dates:Mondays for five weeks; June 4 - July 2
Time: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m

ADD/ADHD Class
This class is for caregivers who want to learn more about ADD/ADHD (attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity) and ways to effectively help children with AD/HD.

Dates: May 25 or July 20
Time: Noon - 2 p.m.

New Mom's Support Group
For mothers to learn more about the postpartum period - including postpartum blues and depression - with practical and up-to-date information in a compassionate, respectful, supportive environment. You must call to register before attending. Light refreshments provided.

Dates: First Friday of every month
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Children of Divorce
This group will help children cope with adjustment difficulties resulting from parents separating or divorcing, changes in relationships with extended family, estrangement from one parent and the introduction of stepparents and stepsiblings. The format will be two age groups led by a counselor.

Boys and girls ages 5 through 8

New Group! Children's Survivors Group
This group helps children cope with surviving sexual abuse. The group will help teach survivors mindful trust, cooperation, body safety and appropriate sharing. This group is not to be used in place of individual and/or family counseling. Although the group is meant to be theraputic, this is a psycho-educational group to help teach children coping skills. It is funded in part by the Kind World grant. Classes are free. You must register to attend. The group is facilitated by two licensed mental health counselors. All sessions are Mondays for six weeks in Suite 340, Central Medical Building, Mercy Medical Center.

5-8 year old boys
June 8 - July 9, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

5-8 year old girls
June 8 - July 9, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

9-12 year old boys
June 8 - July 9, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

9-12 year old girls

New Class! Care for Kids
This new class aims to prevent child sexual abuse through sexual health education. The class will teach participants self-esteem, respect for self and others, rewarding human relationships and avoidance of sexual coercion. The first Tuesday evening session (June 5 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.) is for parents only to learn more about the class and to ask questions. The remaining five Tuesday sessions are the groups for children to attend. The groups are co-facilitated by a licensed mental health counselor and a trained volunteer. The classes are free. Refreshments provided.

Boys and girls 3 to 7 years old
Dates: June 12- July 10
Time: To be determined by parents and instructors together

Children's Social Education Groups
Topics include feeling identification, self-esteem/social skills, anger management/conflict resolution, spirituality and coping with grief and loss, body safety (ages 4-6), drugs and alcohol prevention (ages 7-9), shaken baby syndrome prevention (ages 10-12). Final class is environmental safety and brings parents and children together for this one class. Classes are free. You must register to attend.

Ages 4 through 6
Aug. 6 - Sept. 24, 4 - 5 p.m.

Ages 7 through 9
Aug. 6 - Sept. 24, 5 - 6 p.m.

Ages 10 through 12
