abuse and neglect. Almost 82 percent of these children are younger
than 5; 42 percent are younger than 12 months.

Education and Prevention Programs
The Light a Child's Life program supports a wide variety of education
and prevention opportunities for children, adolescents, families,
schools and adult groups. The classes and programs are listed below.
All are free of charge.

Project Prevention
Active Parenting
Active Parenting classes are offered for parents of children age
infants to adolescents. Six 90-minute sessions cover the following
topics:
- Parenting styles
- Techniques of encouragement
- Understanding children's behavior
- The responsibilities of parenthood
- Problem-solving
- How to develop cooperation
- Building better communication skills
- Boundaries of tolerance
- Peer support for parents
- Professional support system
Summer 2007 Schedules
Children's Classes
These classes enable children to be active agents in their own healthy
emotional development. The classes are designed for specific age
groups: 4-to 6-year-old boys and girls; 7-to-9-year-old boys and
girls; 10-to-12-year-old girls; and 10-to-12-year-old boys. Topics
include:
- Overcoming low self-esteem
- Anger management
- The emotional and physical dangers of drug and alcohol abuse
- Coping with divorce
- Relationship-building in a blended family
- Improving social skills
- Coping with death and grief
Summer 2007 Schedules
School Programs
School programs offered by Light a Child's Life serve the needs
of children, teachers and school administrators. Classes focus on
the same topics covered in the Children's Classes. Additionally,
classes may be customized to fit the specific needs of an individual
school.
Conflict Resolution
This program places strong emphasis on developing a collaborative
approach to problem solving. It is offered as a School Program.
Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention
Program participants learn about Shaken Baby Syndrome and its prevention.
The program is tailored for presentation to specific audiences,
according to interest and age level. It is available for middle
school students, high school students, and adults.
Child Abuse
This program covers the signs and symptoms of child abuse and how
it can be prevented. Presentations are customized to accommodate
audience interest and age level.
Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training
This two-hour program is available to any mandatory reporter group.
It complies with the Iowa Code of Mandatory Reporter Training.
Reality Education Prevention Program (REAP)
Young drivers participate in this four-part alcohol abuse prevention
series, which is designed to prevent repeat drunk-driving offenses.
The program seeks to help young drivers modify their behavior through
education and reality experiences.
Project Prevention
This program examines the consequences of using alcohol and drugs
and promotes positive decision-making for children and adolescents.
Project Prevention classes are conducted in grade schools and high
schools.
