Mercy Total Joint Care Center

Steps to a Successful Joint Replacement

couple walkingMercy Total Joint Care Center focuses on complete recovery through a series of steps built around your needs and rehabilitation.

The Decision for Joint Replacement

Once you and your doctor have decided on joint replacement, our staff manage all necessary steps for your care. They will schedule your pre-admission, blood donation and education classes.

Education Classes

Before surgery, you and your family have the option of attending a class where every detail will be explained by our nurses. We recommend that a family member or close friend attend class so they can be educated about serving as a “coach” to assist with your recovery. Classes are scheduled every Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. and by appointment. Please contact us at least one week in advance to register for a class.

Day of Surgery

You will be admitted to the hospital on the day of your surgery. After your joint replacement and some time in recovery, you will be brought to your room in the Total Joint Care Center. Once you are settled, your rehabilitation will begin with simple bed exercises. By the evening, you may already be up in a chair with help.

Your Hospital Stay

The day after surgery, you will be helped into your own clothes, if desired. Depending on your ability, you may have private and group physical therapy sessions each day. Your coach may participate with you in physical therapy to improve your comfort and help build your confidence. You will enjoy socializing with other joint care patients and coaches during your stay.

Continued Recovery

About three days after surgery, you and your coach may be fully prepared to continue your recovery. Based on your needs, this may take place at home, skilled care, rehabilitation center or some other program.

Staying in Touch

You should be able to resume most normal activities within two to six weeks. Approximately three weeks after surgery, the Total Joint Care Center nurse will contact you for a follow-up assessment. However, you are free to contact us at any time.
