Voice Clinic

Mercy Rehabilitation Voice Clinic offers videostroboscopy, a diagnostic procedure that helps determine the cause and severity of a voice problem. Voice problems may include the following symptoms: hoarseness, vocal fatigue, breathiness, reduced vocal range, loss of voice, pitch breaks, strain or struggle voice, and vocal tremor.

Videostroboscopy examines and records vocal fold movement using state-of-the-art equipment. It permits visualization of the vibratory pattern of the vocal folds normally not seen by the human eye. It examines how vocal fold vibration is changed, and helps determine the prognosis for the voice and the best treatment approach. Videostroboscopy also can outline techniques to be taught to the patient in speech therapy that may improve the sound of the voice and decrease further damage to the vocal folds.

Viewing your vocal fold vibration on videotape can help you understand your voice problem and learn how to improve it. Videostroboscopy also can aid in early identification and treatment of voice problems before surgery may be needed.

How is the procedure done?
At Mercy Medical Center a team approach is generally taken to videostroboscopy, using the specialized skills of a board certified otolaryngologist and speech pathologist. A topical anesthetic spray may be applied to your throat to diminish any mild discomfort you may feel during the exam. Then, a lighted scope is inserted in your mouth or nose to visualize and examine vocal fold movement. An attached video camera allows a recording to be made of the vocal fold movement.

Preparing for the exam
No specific preparation is required for the videostroboscopy exam. You may eat a light meal before the test and wear street clothes. Valet parking is available at the Jones Street entrance of Mercy Medical Center.

Videostroboscopy is just one component of a total voice work-up. Your physician may recommend further evaluation and speech therapy based upon the results of your videostroscopy.
