| Injury Prevention Education
Injury
prevention education is an important part of trauma care at Mercy
Medical Center-Sioux City. Injury prevention education works to
prevent or lessen the likelihood of severe injury by encouraging
safe practices and the use of protective devices such as seat belts
and helmets.
Traumaroo is Mercy Trauma Center's injury prevention mascot.
"Troo" is a kangaroo that makes visits to preschools throughout
the Siouxland area. Troo talks to children about the importance
of safety belts, bicycle helmets and other safety gear.
Safe
and Sound is part of the Pediatric Orientation Program (POPS)
that started at Mercy in 1991. POPS familiarizes children with what
takes place at hospitals, helps them feel comfortable in a hospital
setting and educates them about safety. Safe and Sound is available
to any school in the Siouxland area that requests the program for
its first grade students. Safe and Sound focuses on car, bike and
water safety and includes:
- a tour of the Mercy Emergency Department and an instructional
program from the Mercy Trauma Center staff.
- a hands-on experience in an ambulance and a presentation by
paramedics.
- a video
- a special hands-on activity session in which students learn
about medical equipment.
