Iowa Regional Trauma Designation
Mercy
Trauma Center is the only trauma care facility in western Iowa to
receive the Iowa Department of Public Health's "regional" designation
in conjunction with a new statewide trauma system.
As part of the statewide
system, all hospitals in Iowa completed a process of categorization
and verification as trauma care facilities. The state established
four levels of trauma care service based upon resources available
at each hospital. The state-designated trauma care levels are "resource,"
"regional," "area" and "community." Critically injured patients
who require specialized care are transferred to a resource or a
regional trauma care facility.
As a regional trauma care
facility, Mercy provides comprehensive care for the severely injured
patient with complex multi-system trauma. An organized trauma team
including a general surgeon, emergency physician, anesthesiologist,
nursing and ancillary personnel is immediately available when the
patient arrives at the emergency department.
State trauma facility
designations are valid for three years, and hospitals must reapply
for verification of their trauma care designations.
