Vascular Services
Mercy
is a vascular center of excellence that uses state-of-the-art technology
and talented physicians from a variey of disciplines to treat a
broad range of disorders involving the arteries and veins outside
the heart.
HealthGrades, the nation’s leading provider of independent hospital ratings, ranked Mercy #1 in Iowa for vascular surgery for 2007 and also presented Mercy with the Vascular Care Excellence Award™ for 2007, which ranks Mercy among the top 10% of the nation’s 5,000 hospitals for vascular surgery services.
Because vascular disease is one of the leading causes of death
and disability in the nation and Siouxland, Mercy’s expertise
is a valuable asset to the regional community. Early intervention
in the overall progression of vascular disease may not only prevent
a more serious medical emergency such as a stroke or the amputation
of a limb, but it can also help patients live longer and experience
better quality of life.
A vascular surgeon, neurosurgeons, general surgeons, an interventional
radiologist and interventional cardiologists perform a number of
specialized vascular procedures at Mercy. Carotid endarterectomies
(surgical procedures that clear the major blood vessels in the neck
of fatty buildup) prevent a blood flow blockage that could lead
to a stroke. Circulation problems in peripheral areas of the body,
such as the legs, are effectively treated by unblocking clogged
arteries with balloon angioplasty and stents. Mercy has been very
successful with minimally invasive procedures to treat thoracic
and abdominal aortic aneurysms and carotid, renal and vascular diseases.
Physicians involved in vascular services are supported by staff
members in the Mercy Heart Center, surgical services, radiology
and many other departments and units throughout the hospital.
