Speech Therapy

The goal of speech therapy is to assist each patient in achieving his or her best possible voice. Speech therapists evaluate the patient’s skills and vocal habits. Voice therapy is a specific kind of speech therapy that concentrates on vocal wellness and helping patients learn to produce an effortless voice. In voice therapy, treatment approaches may include counseling the patient, breathing exercises, resonant voice treatment (work on "focusing" the voice away from the throat), and vocal function exercises.

Speech therapists hold a master’s degree and have completed a nine month clinical fellowship. After completing the fellowship, an appropriately qualified speech therapist is eligible for a Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech and Hearing Association. A speech therapist must be licensed by the state in which the therapist practices.
