At any given time, almost six million Americans suffer from problem wounds. There are many different types of wounds. Some are associated with complications from diabetes and others related to vascular disorders. Other types include pressure sores and traumatic wounds. These hard-to-heal wounds need advanced care. The Advanced Wound Care Center at Mercy provides specialized, state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of a wide range of wounds. We use the most up-to-date approaches to wound healing, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat:
- Chronic wounds
- Post-surgical wounds
- Pressure ulcers
- Diabetic ulcers
- Wounds from traumatic injury
- Wounds from vascular disorders
- Venous arterial insufficiency
- Burns
For Serious Wounds--Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
The Advanced Wound Center at Mercy Medical Center is the only area hospital to offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the most serious wounds. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment where a patient breathes 100 percent oxygen while in a pressurized chamber. Large doses of oxygen are dissolved into blood or body tissues at these pressures. This increased oxygen promotes wound healing by:
- Stimulating small blood vessel growth
- Promoting new skin growth
- Helping to fight infection
Several conditions benefit from HBOT including:
- Diabetics with a wound that is slow to heal, or is not healing
- A person with damaged tissue from radiation therapy
- Someone with a skin graft that has a questionable blood supply
- Certain infections of the bone and/or skin
- Traumatic injuries-Crush injuries" and/or a post surgical wound that is failing to heal
